A quick addendum to the recent spate of posts Tolkien-related:



I don't think Evan's point about Sam's "sublimated same-sex desire for Frodo" is "reading far too much into things." Though i'm not entirely convinced that his incessant optimism is the product of said sublimated desire, the presence of such tension is more than evident, particularly in Jackson's films, and merits more attention than i've given it.



In other news, The Times apologizes for its complacent apologia of Bush administration fabrications about Iraq's nonexistent Weapons of Mass Destruction, while it looks like President Brodhead will have a number of Weapons of Class Instruction to contend with down in Durham.



Over in Stamford, the corporate heart of toney Fairfield County, 109 Nursing Home Workers are on a three day strike

The union accuses Stamford Health System of trying to force its workers to accept limited health insurance or trying to get rid of the union altogether.



"This three-day job action is based on their unfair labor practices," Chernoff said. "They have threatened to fire people for exercising their legal right to strike."



The health system has refused to discuss a contract unless the workers agree to their terms, she said.



"It is going to be very difficult for us to reach an agreement if they will not sit down at the negotiating table," Chernoff said.
