One great thing about being back in New York is that here, music stores don't keep their hip hop sections in glass cases - you can actually browse. Don't get me wrong, i think Cutler's is a great store. The folks who work there know their music and love to talk to folks about music, and if i were staying in New Haven (and weren't organizing) i would love to work there. But keeping the hip hop section behind glass is totally unjustifiable. It constructs hip hop and hip hops fans, through a racialized lens, as criminal. In New Haven, a city which is 44% African American and 20% Latino/a, Cutlers, which now sits at the gentrified heart of Yale's post-urban yuppie amusement park, instates and performs the logics of the exclusionary architecture of Bruce Alexander's wildest dreams. There are more pressing fights to be waged, certainly, but i think people who shop at Cutlers should let the folks there know that you aren't happy about this.
