And of course there's also the fact that we are seeing these images, that these images were photographed, captured. The technology of photography and its relationship to empire have been well documented. Yet the brutality of these images, the violence of these images - particularly contrasted with the smiles of the torturers, holding up their rubber gloves over the piles of naked bodies like fishermen about to gut their catches, is staggering.
Naomi Klein argues, "It's time for a mutiny." These pictures make it very difficult to deny this.
