Kill Bill Vol 1. is certainly visually alluring. I think the accolades proclaiming the film 'genius' are somewhat exaggerated, though. I enjoyed both Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I even liked Jackie Brown. Granted, the second half of the film's supposed to be better, but KB1 seems like a two hour long chain of racist tropes of difference followed by exhilarating smooth and beautiful cinematography. Uma Thurman is fantastic, and it's hard to malign Tarantino's skill at crafting beautiful, haunting, sexy images. Still, i have a hard time sorting out what's at stake in the racialized undertones of Tarantino's brilliantly stylized images of gore and campy referencing of hong kong action films, 70's "blaxploitation," and James Bond movies. I need to think more about this, i guess.
