I hate this library a lot. I've already discussed its panopticism, but then there's the whole "you can't so much as walk through the door without an ID card" thing, and people talk loudly despite the presence of thousands of people trying to get reading done, and people type loudly on their laptops in rooms where you are not supposed to bring your laptops and loudly much on whatever ridiculously expensive food and drink they have purchased at Dean & DeLuca or insert bourgie eatery here. And they shout on their celolphones in the middle of the fucking library with only a glass panel separating them from those of us making vain attempts to read, and it realy does remind me of Godard's panning back and forth through walls of the occupied '68 factory in Tout Va Bien. Sterling, like much of the Yale campus, is a monument to a certain kind of 19th century/early 20th century imperialism for which i have no nostalgia or sympathy, but Bobst's postmodern, mid-late twentieth century imperialism, kind of militarized CCL on crack, isn't an improvement but rather a frenzied reconfiguration which is deeply problematic, and hard to study in and someone just stole my fucking table.
