Metablog

I've been getting a suprising number of search hits concerning the dentyne fire commerical post a couple weeks ago. In a way, i regret this, because i think my analysis of marketable ethnicity could have been stronger and more nuanced. Hopefully Arlene Davila's new book Barrio Dreams, which i'm currently reading, will help me with some more precise and insightfuk analyses to bring to the commercial as text.

In other news, my post last night about When Harry Met Sally has met with concern from both Alyssa and Erin, who have more fond estimations of the film's sincerity than i. (Meanwhile, my mom also reads my blog, and teases me about this.) In truth, maybe WHMS needs to be read on a more abstract criterion than that on which i have attempted to judge it. I stand firm (and toned.. hehehe) to my assertion that Ephron's tale is deeply cynical at its core about human need and desire - alot like the end of High Fidelity, but less quirkily romantic and realistic and more abjectly hopeless. Nevertheless, When Harry Met Sally - and the imitators it spawned need to be read as a genre on the level of cultural productiona nd the cultural politics they espouse, enact, and perform.

Say Anything is a great, great movie. Except for the fucking Peter Gabriel song.
