A commercial i just saw encouraging viewers of MTV2 to join the army special forces (call this number to recieve your free video) depicts a group of men wearing cloth head coverings loading what appear to be objects pertaining to weapons of mass destruction program related activities into a truck. Through a yellowish, infrared vision goggle hue, our narrator informs us that these ethnicized and racialized representations of "the enemy" are being monitored by heroic american troops who are heroically starving themselves past the limit of their rations in order to monitor the terrorists. We never "see" the GIs, we're just told that they are present, watching from their concealed location, heroically starving themselves. That we don't see them is interesting, because it not only makes possible the suggestion of the advertisement that if we are masculine enough to starve ourselves and face death and possibly beheading, it could very well be "us" in the concealed, supposedly omniscient/mute and invisible object position of the heroic soldier, but also marks this position as racially ambiguous. Although we're clearly meant to assume that this possible us/invisible object is "different" from the Kaffiyeh-clad targets of "our" surveillance, the postmodern soldier is multiethnic but invisible.
And then, of course, there's the whole "we fuck you over and thus you are a hero" thing, which seems like a bizarre way of recruiting poor kids to die, not "for a mistake," but rather for something which was, from the outset, wholly deliberate.
