Fox released the sixth season of The Simpsons on DVD yesterday, which, among other great episodes, like "Lemon of Troy," "Two Dozen and One Greyhounds," ("be my vest,") "Homer The Great," and "Lisa's Wedding," to name a few, contains the Simpsons' take on the Rush Limbaugh, Contract On America era, "Sideshow Bob Roberts," which is an extended riff on All The President's / Few Good Men (Smithers as "Deep Throat"...) and depicts the republicans as an elite fascist conspiracy/cult who speak satanic languages and whose membership includes dracula and responds approvingly to the misunderstood suggestion that they nominate a water cooler for mayor. The episode brilliantly takes on the racist Willie Horton ads (in 1995/6, i guess Dukakis was still vaguely contemporary) and ranks just below "Last Exit To Springfield" (the episode where the plant goes on strike) and the episode where Burns flees to Cuba with the trillion dollar bill on my list of favorite "political" Simpsons episodes. I was going to write something longer and more above a 5th grade reading level, but instead i will shut up and you can go rent the DVD and watch the episode.
And then there's "Lisa's Rival," in which Homer, guarding his massive pile of fructose, opines "In America, first you get the sugar, then you get the power, then you get the women" and confesses "I can't live the buttoned-down life like you! I want it all! The terrifying lows! The dizzying highs! The creamy middles!" I'd say something about this, but you should go read some Sidney Mintz instead.
