On the first day of the strike, NYU administrators added themselves to every class on the electronic Billboard server. They did this as a way to monitor how, where, and if classes were being taught during the strike, to, in essence, spy on faculty and instructors - and, in the languages, the TAs who teach their own classes like one woman from the French department I was talking to yesterday afternoon while we made a couple hundred yellow armbands. This hi-technology tool for distributing assignments and communicationg with students, in the eyes of the deans, is a means for surveiling and policing the interactions between teachers and students. Whether or not Beckman is telling the truth, that this was only intended for courses taught by us, is inconsequential. The administration has been trying to spy on our relationships with our students and use the information they find against all of us as grist for the disciplinary mill. The faculty are furious. So am I.
