sung tongs, indie thongs?

Last night, Norwegian electro-pop sensation Annie, backed by her band the Anniemals, played a free half hour set in a weird trendy as fuck tribeca hotel on 6th ave (namely the Tribeca Grand Hotel, fyi). I enjoyed Anniemal, Annie's debut record which, i think, the point of last night's set was probably to find a US label or distributor for or something, tremendously, as did my friend Jia Lynn, so we decided to go to the show. We got to the hotel at 9 and there was a big line forming outside. The show wound up not starting until after midnight. This was ok, since no one was paying for tickets or anything, and the brief set was worth it. (Don't believe me? Try to find "my heartbeat" online. You will.) Annie repeatedly referenced the fact that she and her band rarely did live gigs, but they sounded tight, powerful, and energetic, which is really all you can ask for from "glitch pop." During the three hour wait for the booming DJ set to end and the band to come on stage, this really tall dude was wandering around the crowd with a camera, pushing people around to get better shots of all the most photogenic hipsters. Dude put his hand on my head to steady his shot. I kid you not.

Anyway, he gets the woman standing next to me and JL to turn around, bend over, pull the bottom of her toga-like dress down and let him take a picture of her thong underwear. Then he gets the guy standing in front of her to put his face like right up against her thong and takes a picture of that. Everyone else was somewhere on a bell curve between uncomfortable, jadedly indifferent, and contemptuous, while the society photographer for the williamsburg set just stood around and looked self-satisfied and repeatedly shoved his camera in Annie's face when the set began. All of which makes me proud of my supreme dorkitry.
