Two weeks after telling a group of police sergeants he did not
believe the fatal police shooting of Amadou Diallo was a crime, Fernando Ferrer,
a Democratic candidate for mayor, said in numerous interviews yesterday that
those remarks were "careless."
Mr. Ferrer's series of mea culpas around
Manhattan followed days of bruising criticism from black political leaders who
were incensed by Mr. Ferrer's suggestion that there had been an attempt to
"overindict" those responsible for the 1999 shooting of Mr. Diallo, an unarmed
African immigrant. This week, a poll showed that Mr. Ferrer has lost ground to
C. Virginia Fields, the only African-American seeking the Democratic
nomination.
