Like many, i've been saddened by the reports from the Sago mine in West Virginia. Jordan Barab has a post which everyone needs to read. Barab refutes the company's assertion that the disaster was caused by a lightning bolt and instead locates the blame in the Republican-corporate assault on Occupational Safety and Health enforcement.

My thoughts are with the families and friends of the workers who didn't make it, and with the survivors of the landslide in Indonesia.

  1. Sago is local news around here, and the Pgh Post-Gazette (which is left-of-center, but definitely the local mainstream paper) has come down hard on the mine's management and implicitly on weak OSHA enforcement. More investigative reporting to come, hopefully...
