The West End Gate, a bar on 114th street and broadway which is mostly frequented by Columbia folks, has recieved the naples treatment - shut down for serving alcohol to minors. Back in 8th and 9th grade, a bunch of bands from my high school (Waple, The Laspees, and Solamente, to name a few - all three of which contributed members to one incarnation or another of these guys) used to play in a little room in their basement. (They did not serve us alcohol, to the best of my knowledge,) so despite the fact that i haven't been inside the place for about eight years, it has a lot of weird nostalgic value for me. (Hanging out on 114th street between sets watching rats run in between the parked cars and awkwardly trying to fit in...) Anyway, if theys stay closed for a while, they'll probably just get replaced by a Duane Greed or a starfucks, so i guess i hope they reopen soon...
It's been a good weekend. There's an increasing migration of various friends into New York, and i'm excited and happy about this. I've made some slow progress on the job search, but i also feel more confident about things and will find something soon. And i'm excited about two Sleater-Kinney shows in early March, (Not to mention The Woods on May 24.)
Coming Soon: a look at the Feb Issue of Anthropology News' arguments over the AAA's decision to not cross the San Francisco Hilton's picket lines.
