An article in the Times' SundayBusiness section today on gender and advancement in law firms takes a partner at Proskauer Rose LLP as one of its privileged informants, and Bettina Plevan has only accolades for her prestigious employer. But lest we be blindsided by NYU's former and Yale's current union-busting law firm du jour (NYU's moved on to Jackson Lewis, Yale went to Proskauer from the notorious Seyfarth Shaw)'s supposed commitment to gender equity, let's think for a moment about what kind of work this firm actually does, what it is fighting against when it helps corporations like Yale, Columbia, and NYU in their quests to stifle some of the strongest and most powerful voices for dismantling/transforming gendered work structures in some of the fastest growing corporate sectors in the United States. Union busting law firms can never be feminist enterprises, can never be supportive of equality in the workplace.
