Vin Petrini's newest spin tactic, claiming that 1199 has ignored "larger trends" in favor of leveraging vicious attacks against an underserving YNHH, is nearly as silly as it is arrogant. The success of the hospital campaign thus far in leveraging pressure on hospital management and forcing serious structural change in debt collection practices has occurred precisely because researchers, organizers, workers, and debtors have powerfully demonstrated the ways in which tax-deductible, ostensibly non-profit hospitals like Yale have profited enormously from exploiting the declining availability and icreasing costs of health care for working people and the unemployed poor. The movement has achieved stunning successes against and intransigent and imperious opponent precisely because it has looked at health care structurally. Petrini, who doesn't even know when his workers are on strike, seems to be talking out his ass once again.
