Global expansion is the core of what Sexton calls his "ICE" concept: his idea that, by 2050, the world will adopt an economy of "intellectual, cultural and educational activity" that will result in the emergence of worldwide "idea capitals" dedicated to encouraging and attracting creative, entrepreneurial and economic talent."ICE?" Seriously?
Participation in this "ICE" sector, Sexton says, is not only an opportunity for NYU to gain prominence in the global dialogue but a key element of its survival and fundamental mission.
"It starts off with our embrace of otherness in who we are and our comfort in being a genuinely integrated part of the city," Sexton said. "This is our personality, so we don't gate ourselves off, we don't retreat, we don't mind having our campus interrupted with other buildings instead of an NYU building."
Potential "ICE" cities that the university is considering for future global regional campuses include Paris and Shanghai, Sexton said.
